Oculus to Suspend Sales of Rift Developer Kit, Next Version Incoming?

Oculus VR, the company behind the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) headset, has announced that it is to suspend sales of the Oculus Rift developer kit. A post from an Oculus Community Manager named cybereality on Reddit confirmed as much, explaining that some components used in the headset are no longer in production, perhaps hinting that a new version of the development kit is to be released soon.

OculusRift_2The company intends to keep on selling the remaining inventory of development kits until they have run out in each region. Sales will then be suspended “until we are able to deliver news orders”. Oculus Rift developer kits are currently on sale in the United States, Canada, parts of the European Union, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Switzerland and Norway.

“We never expected to sell so many development kits and VR only made this much progress with the community’s support and enthusiasm,” the post concluded. “Even though we never wanted to sell out, it’s a good problem to have — Thank you!”

While this doesn’t make mention of a new version of the kit, it does come soon after the company teased its “vision for future development hardware” at its upcoming Games Developer Conference presentation. That’s set to take place on 19th March 2014. Could it be that the company is simply clearing stock to make way for the next development kit? VRFocus will continue to follow the progress of the Oculus Rift leading up to its consumer release.

  1. It’s just OculusVR toying with us some more. Because, well… they can, and we will continue to grovel regardless
