X-Plane to Receive Official Oculus Rift Support

X-Plane, a flight simulator title, is soon to receive support for the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) headset. Developer Laminar Research made the announcement this week, confirming that VR compatibility would be coming to the Windows, Mac and Linux versions of the simulator.

Xplane_1Several new features for the Oculus Rift were detailed. Firstly, players will be able to use the device’s head tracking to get a 3D view of the plane’s cockpit as they pilot it. It can also be used to get a 360 degree view outside of the vehicle. Laminar will also be implimenting true stereoscopic 3D for use with the headset.

Currently running version 10.25, X-Plane lets players pilot many different kinds of aircraft. It also uses a system named the blade element theory to generate aerodynamic forces in real time, as opposed to predetermined stats.

No specific date was given for the support, although Laminar is hoping to have it ready for the eventual consumer version of the Rift. It pegs that down as late 2014. VRFocus will continue to follow the development of X-Plane‘s Oculus Rift support and bring you any news.
