Facebook’s David Ebersman ‘40% of people’s time is spent in gaming’

As part of this evening’s conference call discussing the recently announced acquisition of Oculus VR by Facebook, Facebook’s David Ebersman suggested that the purchase of the virtual reality (VR) company was a step to reach a brand new audience with technology. Compared directly to a leading social platform, Whatsapp, Ebersman stated that that Oculus will continue to be ‘executed as we expect’ as far as videogames are concerned.


Ebersman suggested that a significant reason for the purchase of Oculus VR was that ‘40% of people’s time is spent in gaming’, just as ‘another 40% is spent communicating’. The latter is an aspect of technology that Facebook is arguably leading in, the former is something in which the company holds a keen audience but is yet to have any major impact upon outside of mobile devices. The Oculus Rift headset may well be the key to changing that.
