John Carmack Advised Sony to Hire Oculus Rift Founder Pre-Kickstarter

Oculus VR’s Chief Technology Officer and legendary developer John Carmack has revealed that he once suggested Sony hire Oculus VR founder Palmer Luckey. Apparently the developer advised the tech giant to take Luckey on board before the Kickstarter for the Oculus Rift VR headset had launched. Carmack revealed the story shortly after Sony revealed its Project Morpheus VR headset for the PlayStation 4 at GDC 2014.

PalmerLuckey_1Taking to Twitter shortly after Sony’s Driving the Future of Innovation at Sony Computer Entertainment presentation, Carmack wrote, “Trivia: I had suggested to Sony that they try to hire Palmer Luckey before the Oculus kick starter.”

The Project Morpheus headset may only be a prototype but is already being billed as a true rival to the Oculus Rift. Carmack’s tongue in cheek comment suggests that the company might have been better off it had followed through on his advice. Still, we won’t be able to tell if Carmack was on the money until both headsets are released.

VRFocus will continue to track the development of both Sony’s Project Morpheus prototype and the Oculus Rift and report back with all the latest.
