Oculus Dev Kit Sells Out One Week Before GDC Presentation

The original development kit for the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) headset is now sold out. Users trying to pick up a dev kit from the official Oculus VR website will see a message stating: ‘UNITS ARE CURRENTLY OUT OF STOCK’. This suspension of sale had been warned by the company last month and occurs just under a week before it gives a Game Developers Conference (GDC) presentation about the hardware.

OculusRift_4Oculus VR announced the shortage of stock back in February 2014, citing that some of the components used in the development kit were no longer in production. One such component was revealed to be the devices display, which the team confirmed at the South By South West (SXSW) Gaming festival earlier this week.

Oculus VR’s GDC presentation takes place on 19th March. The company has teased that it will talk about ‘the future’ of the hardware there. While this could mean details on the eventual consumer version, it’s also hoped that the company will be announcing the next iteration of the development kit at the show to be put on sale soon after.

Such an iteration could include the improved screen and positional tracking featured in the Crystal Cove Oculus Rift prototype, first shown off at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Janauary. VRFocus will be at GDC to bring you all the latest on the Oculus Rift.
