Oculus Rift Launch Title Darknet Announced

Indie developer E McNeill has announced Darknet, a Cyberpunk Hacking virtual reality (VR) title coming exclusively to the Oculus Rift headset. The experience, which is aiming to be a launch title for the consumer version of the Rift, tasks players with hacking the internet to retrieve data.

As can be seen in the trailer above, Darknet casts players as a ‘Hollywood hacker’. The title is played using the Rift’s head-tracking as players try to break through firewalls before their connection is traced. Players hack nodes by beating procedurally-generated challenges. It’s inspired by cyberpunk fiction such as The Lawnmower Man and Ghost in the Shell.

The title is a full version of McNeill’s Ciess, which won the Open Call Grand Prize at the IncideCade Oculus VR Jam in September 2013. It was praised for being ‘immediately accessible with a low learning curve, yet offers deep and addictive gameplay’. This upgraded version has tweaked the hacking system somewhat, as well as added new art and music. The title is being developed solely by McNeill, although he has opened up a subreddit in which fans can follow development and make suggestions.

Darknet will be showing off its first demo at the upcoming Game Developers Conference (GDC) on 17th – 21st March 2014. Should the consumer version of the Oculus Rift launch at the end of the year as thought then expect to see the title release around then. VRFocus will be covering GDC and bringing you all the latest on this and all other VR titles.
