Sulon Combining Augmented and Virtual Reality for Unique New Headset

Sulon Technologies has announced a unique new virtual reality (VR) device named The Cortex at this week’s Game Developers Conference (GDC) in San Francisco. The device aims to incorporate both augmented and virtual reality into a wireless, wear-and-play device that should prove to offer a different VR experience than other headsets.

Sulon_1The Cortex boasts a proprietary spatial scanner that maps the surrounding environment that the user is playing it. Content is adjusted to that physical environment and then displayed on a mobile smartphone or tablet with display sizes ranging from 5.5 inches to 7 inches. That device is then fitted to the Cortex Visor which converts the screen into a stereoscopic display. The company recommends that devices with Snapdragon 800 processors, currently the most powerful chipsets made by Qualcomm, are used for content.

Sulon Technologies describes the device as a ‘holodeck-like’ experience that combines existing environments with virtual reality features. The company is taking pre-orders for the SDK of the device, which is expects to start shipping in Q4 2014. It includes the visor, which currently supports Android devices with plans for iOS already in motion. The kits can be ordered some the company’s official website.

VRFocus will continue to follow the development of VR headsets such as The Cortex and beyond, and report back with all the latest.
