Back to the Future’s Hoverboard Made into VR Experience with Wii Balance Board‏

Indie developer Cratesmith has created a new virtual reality (VR) demo that pays tribute to the popular Back to the Future film series. The demo lets players control the iconic hoverboard, which debuted in the second movie, using an Oculus Rift VR headset along with the Wii’s Balance Board peripheral. Footage taken from the software can be seen below, first posted on the official Oculus VR forums.

Hoverboard_1The demo simply lets users ride the hoverboard around an urban environment. A car resembling the franchise’s legendary DeLorean time mission can also be seen sitting by the side of the road. The demo isn’t currently available for all to try, though the developer has said that he could possibly make it available. Right now the software only runs on Mac.

It’s not the first project to translate a scene or prop from a film into a VR experience. VR developer Nick Pittom recently released a scene from the Studio Ghibli classic, Spirited Away, and is working on another adaptation for My Neighbour Totoro. VRFocus will continue to follow any and all VR projects and bring them to you.
