Sir David Attenborough to Make VR Nature Documentary with Oculus Rift

Sir David Attenborough, a famous English broadcaster behind many nature documentaries, is to make one of the first virtual reality (VR) documentaries. He will be writing and presenting a new project shot in 360 degrees and viewed using the Oculus Rift VR headset. The project is titled Conquest of the Skies and is currently shooting in Borneo and several other locations.

OculusDK2_1The project is being developed by Atlantic Productions. Speaking about VR, company commercial director John Morris told realscreen that “In terms of the creative challenge, we look at this as being comparable to the beginning of the film industry,” stating that this could be the first VR wildlife documentary for the technology. It’s set to air on Sky 3D, although it’s unclear if that viewing will come with support for the headset or if another digital release will accommodate it.

Using the Oculus Rift headset for projects other than videogames has been discussed often. When Facebook bought Oculus VR last month it said that it could see the technology being used for other kinds of experiences in the long run. Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) also spoke about using its Project Morpheus VR headset for the PlayStation 4 for virtual tourism down the line. VRFocus will continue to follow any and all applications of VR and bring you the latest.
