VR Adventure XING Switches to Unreal Engine 4

Developer White Lotus Interactive has announced that it has switched development of its upcoming XING: The Land Beyond to Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4. The team has been making the transition from the Unreal Development Kit since the end of the Game Developer’s Conference. XING: The Land Beyond is a first-person puzzle experience set to arrive on PC with full support for the Oculus Rift virutal reality (VR) headset.

The developer listed several reasons for the change on its official blog. Chief among them was more assured support for the Oculus Rift, given that Unreal Engine 4 allows for full integration of the technology. It was also reasoned that the change would allow the team to push the title’s visuals even further and that they would benefit from the constant support for the new engine.

White Lotus Interactive has managed to recreate the title’s rainforest level with Unreal Engine 4 so far, stating that the new engine increases workflow and speed as well as making coding ‘far more enjoyable’.

“Switching to UE4 was kind of like switching from a 2002 Toyota Prius to a 2013 Tesla Model S,” the developer wrote. “The Prius was a great step in the right direction for efficiency and got you where you needed to go, but sometimes couldn’t get past a certain speed. The Model S gets you where you need to go in modern style and more efficiently, and comes standard with navigation and smooth controls.”

It was stressed that the transition shouldn’t delay the title’s eventual release. A specific date isn’t clear just yet. VRFocus will continue to follow XING: The Land Beyond‘s progress and report back with all the latest.
