X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter Inspired Spindrift Hits Oculus Rift

Indie developer Frostfire Games has released an early version of its virtual reality (VR) space combat title Spindrift onto the official Oculus VR Share Beta. The title can be downloaded for free over on the portal, which hosts a range of VR experiences for users to try out with the Oculus Rift VR headset. The experience was original developed for the 2013 Oculus VR Jam, which is the version on display here.

Spindrift_1Spindrift cites 1997’s Star Wars: X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter as a major inspiration for its core gameplay. Players select one of 3 randomly generated ships and battle against enemy strike craft and capital ship bosses. Defeating opponents earns you money that can then be spent on further upgrades to your craft. It is described as a ‘small scope’ title that also takes inspiration from other videogames such as FTL: Faster Than Light and Rogue Legacy.

While the experience is listed as ‘pre-release’ on the Oculus VR website, it is unclear what Frostfire Games’ plans are for the future. Could we see a fully-fledged version of Spindrift as a commercial product? VRFocus will continue to follow the developer’s progress moving forward and report back with the latest.

  1. Thanks for the mention Jamie!

We are going to release the same game with a new “adventure” game mode. Currently planned is the player will start with a bare-bones base ship, then explore a pure procedurally generated universe collecting loot to upgrade their ship. We’ll be spending a lot of time polishing up the AI, and creating an algorithm that really makes every play-through feel different.

We are targeting for an Early Access release sometime after Christmas this year.
