Dev Making Mario Kart VR, Getting Hydra Controls, Demo Available

Indie developer God Waffle is working on a virtual reality (VR) adaption of the Mario Kart series for the Oculus Rift VR headset. Named Mario Kart VR, the project already has several demos available, and was brought to VRFocus‘ attention with a developer update revealing controls for the Razer Hydra motion controller. Support for the controller is yet to be included in the demos, available on the Oculus VR forums, though the developer states that it may instead contribute to a possible original kart racing title.

The developer stressed that the Hydra steering controls were in early prototype stages. The system doesn’t track the users hands in all directions, but will accurately replicate moving your hands up and down to simulate turning a steering wheel. It was also reasoned that controllers and keyboards will still be the main focus for controls, though support for steering wheel peripherals may also be added down the line.

One of the available demos allows users to race around the Donkey Kong Mountain Circuit from the Ninentdo Gamecube’s Mario Kart Double Dash. Users can look around the circuit as they drive, with their vision slightly obscured by Mario’s iconc red cap and large nose. A video running through the track can be seen below. The developer hasn’t decided upon if the upcoming Hydra support will feature in another Mario Kart VR project or be used to make his own cartoon kart racing title.

VRFocus will continue to report on any and all applications of VR and report back with all the latest.
