Indie developer ArchiVision has released the world’s first 1 – 1 virtual reality (VR) roller coaster based on the Helix ride found at the Liseberg theme park in Gothenburg, Sweden. The experience, titled Helix – The Next Level, can be downloaded for free over on the official Oculus VR Share Beta for PC and is compatible with the Oculus Rift VR headset. Possible Mac or Linux versions of the experience have not been detailed.
The Helix – The Next Level recreates the real ride’s 1,381-meter-long track with every twist and turn in places. The ride itself boasts two corkscrews, a Norwegian loop, a top hat and an in-line twist, all of which can be found in the experience. It is the first VR roller coaster to replicate a real life ride. The developer itself has experience making a range of VR roller coasters based on different themes such as Templecoaster and the Cobra Rollercoaster.
VR roller coasters are a popular project for developers though, as ArchiVision notes, players miss out on some sensations such as G-force. Could we find a way to combat these limitations in the future? VRFocus will continue to follow any and all applications of VR and bring you the latest on them.
