DualShock 4’s Light Bar Was Included Because of Morpheus, Sony Reveals

Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) has revealed that the light bar fitted to every DaulShock 4 controller for PlayStation 4 was included because of the upcoming Project Moprheus virtual reality (VR) headset. SCE Europe Senior Designer Jed Ashforth recently revealed as much, explaining that the tracking technology in which the console’s camera peripheral can read and follow the location of a controller was installed to make way for the headset.

“The tracking light… it was our department that said we need that on,” Ashforth told TechRadar. “It was for tracking for VR.”

The Project Morpheus headset features full 360 degree head and positional tracking using this technology. It’s similar to that of the PlayStation Move motion controller, which was introduced with the PlayStation 3 can be used with Project Morpheus on PlayStation 4 as well as the DualShcok 4.

“And when all these things were coming out six months ago and everyone was going ‘it’s reflecting in my TV,’ we were going ‘oh no’ because we couldn’t tell anyone what it was for,” Ashforth concluded.

The PlayStation 4 was recently patched to allow users to dim the ligh bar on the DualShock 4. VRFocus will continue to report on Project Morpheus and report back with all the latest.
