Mortal Online Adds Oculus Rift Support

Mortal Online, the high-fantasy massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) from Star Vault, has today launched an update that includes bringing Oculus Rift compatibility to the videogame. The first MMORPG to add official support for the virtual reality (VR) device, Mortal Online allows for players to continue with their existing accounts and switch on/off the Oculus Rift functionality through an in-game menu.

Mortal Online offers an Unreal Engine 3-based open world MMORPG where the skill of a player matters more than level grinding. This is evidenced by the fact that the videogame does not feature player versus player (PvP) areas in isolation, but instead offers the opportunity to do battle with human rivals anywhere within the world. Players are free to choose their own path within this world, as the official website states: “You decide your own style of playing and whether to focus on PvP or PvE, both sharing the same game world. Devote your life to crafting, combat, magic or trading. Discover new skills, tools and resources. Or be the first to explore new areas to put your name on the map.”

Despite still being in beta, Mortal Online already has a substantial userbase. This lead to the title swiftly passing the Steam Greenlight requirements after the launch of it’s campaign in August 2013. The addition of Oculus Rift support does come as a surprise, especially considering it’s presented as just one of a list of over 60 new additions revealed in the latest patch notes for the videogame.

The Oculus Rift support allows players to customise the presentation of the videogame within VR, offering a ‘control mode’ within it’s menu system. VRFocus has contacted Star Vault for more details on the inclusion of Oculus Rift for the MMORPG and to discuss the possibility of the feature coming with Mortal Online‘s suggested console ports.
