The Old City Cancels Kickstarter, Plans Demo & Relaunch Post-E3

Indie developer PostMod Softworks has cancelled its Kickstarter campaign for the upcoming virtual reality (VR) compatible experience, The Old City. The campaign had hoped to raise $40,000 USD to fund development of the story-driven title, but had only made $13,567 just a week before its intended closure on 28th May 2014. The developer intends to relaunch the campaign after E3 2014 in June, looking to correct many of the issues that it cited in its first attempt.

“Firstly, we’d like to say that we did quite a few things wrong when we started this,” the team’s Blaine Bowen said in a post explaining the cancellation. “The major problem we had was that we did not tell anyone that the Kickstarter was happening. This means that we started cold, so traction was very difficult to achieve.” Bowen reasoned that it hadn’t shown off enough of the title to gain attention. That said, he also argued that the story-driven nature of the title, which sees players exploring the ruins of an ancient civilisation, made it hard to demo without spoiling.

It was also revealed that the demo, originally planned to launch this week, will be held back for the next campaign. “We’d like to try again after E3,” the team stated. “Between the end of this campaign and then, we will prepare everything we need. We’ll hold back on releasing the demo right now, and we’ll launch it with the new campaign.”

“The basic issue is this. We make games. We don’t really do PR. We can, but not very well. We can make games well, however, and we just want to do that. We have been solely focused on making a good game from the start of this, and this whole funding issue is really just a way to let us make games faster. So, we’ll never compromise our game for the sake of PR. I won’t let us do that. One way or another, we are going to finish this game. It may take a lot longer than expected, but it is going to be finished.”

Look for a second run at the campaign after E3, then. The event runs from 10th – 12th June; will PostMod Softworks release any more media about the title in that time? The title is set to arrive with full support for the Oculus Rift VR headset whenever it does arrive. VRFocus will continue to follow The Old City‘s Progress and report back with all the latest updates.
