Samsung Developing VR Headset, Report Claims

A new report has suggested that Korean technology giant Samsung is working on its own virtual reality (VR) headset to go up against the Oculus Rift and Project Morpheus devices. Sources ‘close to Samsung’ claim that the device is set to be announced this year, looking to undercut both of its competitors on release and pricing. Early versions of the device are said already be with developers.

Engadget has the report, suggesting that the device is currently powered by Samsung’s flagship Galaxy smartphone and tablet brand. The consumer release could possibly be upgraded with a new line of hardware that will debut in new Galaxy phones. The kit will apparently run on Android, similar to the GameFace wireless headset, though it’s not clear if the device will be tethered to a piece of hardware.

The report doesn’t clarify if Samsung will utilise positional tracking much like the second Oculus Rift developer kit (DK2) or Project Morpheus. It will allegedly use an OLED screen that either matches the DK2’s 1080p resolution or bests it. Apparently the headset won’t be using Samsung’s own operating system, Tizen. The report describes device as a peripheral that will be focused on gaming first and foremost.

Little else is known about the device right now. It might come as a surprise to hear that the company could be getting into VR but just a few weeks back Sixense CEO Amir Rubin predicted that ‘every major technology company’ would have its own VR headset in the future, and Samsung certainly rank on that list. Of course, Oculus VR has recently reconfirmed that a software development kit (SDK) for its Oculus Rift on Android is also under development. It seems like quite a battle is about to get underway. VRFocus will continue to follow the latest on this rumoured headset and report back with any more updates.

  1. Well that didn’t take long!! Sony, now Samsung!! Who’s next?? Microsoft and Google I would bet!! Let the HMD wars begin!! Oculus with a head start and an all star development team… Sony and Samsung with loads of cash and the ability to manufacture screens designed specifically for the task and the infrastructure to mass produce their HMD’s quickly!! I love this… Still think VR is just a passing fad?? Think again!!
