Unity 4.5 Adds Automated Stereoscopic Rendering for DirectX 11

Unity has detailed the latest updates to its Unity 4.5 videogame engine, which includes a new option for stereoscopic rendering that could prove useful for virtual reality (VR) development. The company has added automated rendering function for Pro users running DirectX 11 that promises to make building 3D videogames ‘much easier’. Given that the Oculus Rift VR headset uses stereoscopic rendering, this could help bring many more titles to the device.


“Many of today’s displays have a 3D feature and ship with 3D glasses,” the company’s website explains, “but few games are designed to take advantage of this. In Unity 4.5 we’ve added a Pro-only function that automates the process of building stereoscopic content for any Windows appliance running DirectX 11, making it much easier to build stereoscopic games.”

The addition is designed more for standard 3D displays, then, but could still prove useful in bringing titles to the Oculus Rift. The company has also revealed its Unity 5 engine, which will bring its own improvements to VR development when it launches.

The Unity Engine has proved popular with indie developers and more when developing for VR. Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4 also includes support for the technology and has seen a growing number of supported projects in recent months.
