Her Director Calls Oculus Rift ‘Inspiring’, Could Use it in Future

The Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) headset has garnered praise from all corners of the videogame industry over the past few years, but hasn’t stopped there. Some of the movie industry’s most iconic figureheads, including the likes of James Cameron, have praised the technology in the past, citing its potential for the medium. Now Her and Being John Malkovich director Spike Jonze has offered his own comments on the headset, calling it both ‘inspiring’ and ‘compelling’.

Speaking at the Cannes Lions festival, as reported by Adweek, Jonze talked about Hello Again, a 360-degree video shot by Chris Milk that showed acclaimed artist Beck performing David Bowie’s Sound and Vision. Shot with 6 GoPro cameras and viewable with the Oculus Rift, Jonze said that the video had given him ‘that feeling’ and suggested that he could well use the headset for his own projects at some point in the future.

“It was really inspiring,” the director said of the Oculus Rift. “I can imagine doing something with it. It’s so compelling. The emotional experience for the viewer—it’s just another way of being able to connect.”

Jonze’s most recent movie, Her, depicted a near future in which current technologies were taken to arguably logical new heights. Home operating systems were able to thoroughly organise owner’s lives and videogames were displayed as holographs and played with gesture controls, with players actually speaking to characters. It’s not hard to imagine the Oculus Rift itself being a part of that sort of world. Given Jonze’s grasp on these types of technologies, he’s certainly be able to use the device to create an interesting 360-degree piece. Could we see a full feature film using the Oculus Rift from the director? Or is he likely to make a short piece in the vein of Hello Again?
