Figure Digital Developing 360 Degree Video Camera for VR Headsets

The last time VRFocus reported on Figure Digital, it was to announce the company’s launch as a new creative agency back in March 2014. The company has clearly come on since then, and has today announced that it is developing its very own camera, shooting in 360 degrees which can then be viewed on virtual reality (VR) headsets such as the Oculus Rift for PC and Project Morpheus for PlayStation 4. At the same time, the company has also confirmed that Drive Worldwide has acquired a ‘significant stake’ in it, and will be working closely with the Drive Productions creative agency.

The camera, named Panopticam, is designed to easily and conveniently shoot 360-degree video. As the concept image (both article images credited to Figure Digital) shows, the device contains 36 HD video cameras, held in place with a 3D printed spherical casing. The camera will reportedly shoot in a seamless 360 degrees, which can then be imported into Adobe’s After Effects software, using a special plugin designed by Figure Digital. The plugin will auto stitch the video files together, allowing for the easy creation of full panoramic footage.

“We hope that content creators looking to design mind-blowing VR video-based experiences (or hybrid video/CGI VR content) will, in future, be shooting with a Panopticam to create truly cinematic-quality VR,” Figure Digital Creative Director Joe Kltez said of the announcement.

Figure Digital plans to release both the camera and software for others to use, though is yet to attach a price or release date to the project. The device weighs in at around 5kg and has a circumference of 15 inches. It is currently being developed in a new ‘innovation studio’ in Kennington, London, which was set up with the aid of the company’s new partner.

VRFocus will continue to follow the progress of both Figure Digital and the Panopticam, bringing you the latest.
