Oculus VR: ‘It’s official, we’re building a platform.’

Since the initial unveiling of the Oculus Rift hardware over two years ago there’s been much talk about the potential for software distribution on the device. Many have suggested that Steam is a perfect portal for Oculus VR to utilise while others insist that the company must create it’s own virtual storefront. Oculus VR themselves have been relatively tight-lipped on the subject, only hinting that the latter is an obvious path to follow. Following a well received showcase at this month’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) however, company CEO Brendan Iribe has broken that silence.

“Jason Holtman recently joined to run platform. He’s going to be largely leading the overall platform strategy around building out the ecosystem and the developer relations with Aaron and publishing with DeMartini.” States Iribe in an interview with Venturebeat. “It’s official. We’re building a platform.”


The interview talks at length about first-party software and the involvement of companies such as Playful Corp., much of which has been discussed on VRFocus in the past. The more important revelation is that Holtman was employed due to his previous experience at Steam.

“There’s a lot of engineering around that… Jason’s background comes from Valve, running Steam and evangelizing Steam to third-party developers over eight years or so. It’s great to get the person who built Steam to help build our platform [sic].”

Palmer Luckey, founder of Oculus VR and the inventor of the Oculus Rift, recently hinted to VRFocus that this would be the most obvious path for the company to take. However, the confirmation that the company has been employing staff specifically for this purpose could well shine light on the direction that the virtual reality headset will take to reach a consumer audience.   1. This is great! I hope they hit all the bases! If it’s going to be it’s own platform it needs some essentials to be successful:

    1.) A reasonable price point
    2.) Exclusive titles of AAA quality
    3.) A strong stable of 1st party developers
    4.) More stuff that I can’t think of right now because it’s lunch time and I got to go!! 🙂
