Sony Shows First 2-Player Project Morpheus Title

Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) has talked a lot about using its Project Morpheus virtual reality (VR) headset for multiplayer experiences on PlayStation 4. The company has mainly adressed the concept of second screen applications for the headset, with one player wearing the device and another perhaps using a TV screen, tablet or PlayStation Vita to interact with them. Now the company has revealed another type of multiplayer experience for the technology in which both players wear a Project Morpheus.

SCE debuted the first 2-player Project Morpheus tech demo on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon earlier this week. Said demo was in fact a mutliplayer version of The Castle tech demo that was playable in single-player form at the headset’s reveal at the 2014 Game Developers Conference (GDC). Host Jimmy Fallon wore one headset, while movie star Channing Tatum donned the other. The two didn’t inteact so much as stand side-by-side, holding PlayStation Move motion controllers. Fallon attacked a dummy with his fists, which was visible on Tatum’s screen as he aimed a crossbow.

Just as with the original version, the tech demo ended with the arrival of an enormous dragon. Despite taking a while to adjust to the headset, it was clear to see that Fallon was impressed with the technology, at one point labelling it ‘the most insane thing ever’. No other details about the technology or the demo were revealed on the show.

Project Morpheus’ appearance on the show does provide hope that the technology will have a big presence at this year’s E3 in Los Angeles, California. SCE is to hold its annual press conference on 9th June 2014 at 18:00 PST or 02:00 BST on 10th June. It’s hoped that the company will announce new videogames for the device and perhaps some clarification on its release details. VRFocus will be at the event to bring you all the latest on Project Morpheus and all other VR headsets and videogames.
