SUPERHOT Dev Talks Multiplayer

Upcoming puzzle-based first-person shooter (FPS) SUPERHOT is due to arrive with a full story-driven single-player campaign next year, but little has been said of possible multiplayer support. That changed recently as the developers behind the title revealed that they had prototyped multiplayer modes for the experience, though had ultimately decided against their inclusion. That said, the developer didn’t rule out the idea of creating a multiplayer version of the title further down the line.


“We did some prototyping and had quite a few different ideas for that,” SUPERHOT‘s developer stated on an Ask Me Anything session on Reddit, “in the end we realised that multiplayer would in fact be different game. But we’re positive that it would be very hot as well and we would love to create that one day.” The team later joked at the flags in a traditional Capture the Flag mode would ‘wave nicely’ when incorporated with the title’s time-based mechanic.

SUPERHOT‘s single-player campaign tasks players with eliminating all enemies within any given level. This is done by effectively stopping time when standing still, allowing players to plot a course through incoming enemy fire, locate a weapon and fight back. It’s not hard to imagine how this mechanic might transfer over to multiplayer, perhaps putting a unique spin on many of the traditional modes that feature in FPS titles and creating entirely new match types as well.

SUPERHOT is set to launch in June 2015 on PC, Mac and Linux with full support for the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) headset. Console versions of the title are also possible in the future. The title recently completed a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign, raising over two and a half times its initial $100,000 USD funding goal.
