PlayStation Network Getting Head-Tracked Avatars with Project Morpheus

Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) has often talked about applications of virtual reality (VR) outside of the immediate videogame experience. The company has been keen to discuss its ‘social screen’ initiative for its Project Morpheus VR headset for PlayStation 4, detailing potential multiplayer plans in which one player uses the headset while others use a TV screen. Now the company has revealed another use for the device: head-tracked avatars via the PlayStation Network.

SCE Europe’s senior engineer Patrick Connor mentioned the feature in a ‘Developing for Project Morpheus’ session at this year’s Develop Conference in Brighton, UK. As can be seen in an image taken by VRFocus below, one of Connor’s slides lists social applications for Project Morpheus, including the social screen idea, companion apps such as those for The Deep and Street Luge, and head-tracked avatars.

Connor didn’t go into specifics about just what this could mean for PlayStation Network. Could the online service perhaps see new software in which users can control 3D avatars with Project Morpheus compatibility? Of course, the PlayStation 3 already has something similar to this feature in PlayStation Home, though its yet to appear on PlayStation 4. Perhaps it relates to developers being able to create head-tracked avatars in their own multiplayer titles.

SCE is yet to confirmed a release date for Project Morpheus. The device is still in its prototyping stages, and won’t be ready for consumers this year. VRFocus will continue to follow Project Morpheus, bringing you all of the latest on its development.
