Project Morpheus PlayStation Vita Integration Confirmed

Back in May of this year, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s (SCEE) Simon Benson hinted at the possibility that the PlayStation Vita may be part of the long-term plan for Project Morpheus. Since then, a member of Benson’s team at SCEE London Studios has gone one further, confirming that the handheld console is already being used internally.

Speaking at the Develop Conference in Brighton last week, Ian Bickerstaff, Technical Director of SCEE Immersive Technology Group, revealed that the use of the PlayStation Vita mirrors that of tablets. VRFocus recently revealed some of the companion apps that will make the Project Morpheus virtual reality (VR) gameplay a more social experience, and that PlayStation Vita can be used in the same fashion as tablets here.

During the session, entitled ‘Developing for Project Morpheus’, Bickerstaff also confirmed that smartphones may be used in the same fashion as tablets and now also PlayStation Vita. It would seem that SCEE are keen to support the purchase of their HMD with flexible arrangements surrounding further peripheral use.

No release date or price point has yet been announced for Project Morpheus. Furthermore, no software titles have been confirmed for consumer release on the device aside from CCP Games’ EVE Valkyrie. VRFocus will keep you updated as more details are revealed on the potential launch of Project Morpheus.
