Survival Simulator The Long Dark to Support Oculus Rift

Indie developer Hinterland is showing promising signs with its upcoming first-person survival simulation title, The Long Dark. Last year the team finished a successful Kickstarter campaign, raising over $250,000 CAD to help fund development, and has since kept fans in the loop with a range of updates. Now the developer has confirmed that the title will feature full support for the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) headset. A new trailer for the title can be seen below.

The news comes by way of The Long Dark‘s official FAQ page, which asks if support for the headset will be included. The developer’s answer reads: “Yes. We are currently working with OculusVR engineers to ensure the best experience possible on that device.” It wasn’t confirmed if this feature would be included in the title at launch. It was also revealed that an Early Access version of The Long Dark‘s Sandbox Mode will be made available in September 2014.

The Long Dark is set in a post-apocalyptic open world following the fall of man-made technology. Players must explore the environment, gathering resources to survive as they manage various systems to take care of themselves, including factors such a dehydration, starvation and blood loss. Other survivors will also populate the area, with players judging for themselves whether they are friend or for and acting in a way they see fit.

A story will be told in an episodice nature, with the developer remaining tight-lipped about further details until the full title’s launch. That said, the previously-mentionned Sandbox Mode will also be included for users trying to survive as long as possible in the harsh environment.

The title’s Kickstarter campaign originally listed The Long Dark for release in October 2014 on PC, Mac and Linux. Given its Early Access release is one month prior to that date, it’s unclear if this is still the case. VRFocus will continue to follow The Long Dark, reporting back with any more updates on its development.
