Virtuality’s Dactyl Nightmare Recreated for Oculus Rift

As many virtual reality (VR) enthusiasts know, the Oculus Rift is far from the first attempt at bringing VR to the masses. Back in the 1990’s the Virtuality line of VR stations tried to break into arcades with titles such as Dactyl Nightmare. It was an ill-fated attempt, though many have fond memories of the device and its experiences. In particular, one developer is resurrecting Dactyl Nightmare for use with the Oculus Rift VR headset.


You may recall VirtualReality.io’s Matt Sonic talking about Dactyl Nightmare in one of VRFocus‘ early Losing My VRGinity articles. The title is a multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS), taking place on a set of platforms. Indie developer Breton is now working to recreate the classic experience for the Oculus Rift, complete with retro-style visuals. An early look at his work can currently be seen on the official Oculus VR Share Beta.

The Oculus Rift tech demo can be downloaded for free on PC, and features support for the Razer Hydra motion controller along with a traditional keyboard and mouse set up. The developer has revealed that he is open to receiving help with the project as it is one of his first projects in terms of coding and developing with the Unity engine. It’s not clear when we might see a more complete version of Dactyl Nightmare, then. VRFocus will continue to follow the project and report back with any more updates on its development.

  1. I have 4 original virtuality machines, 2 of which are running dactyl nightmare. I am now in contact with the original coder, as well as the people who engineered, designed, manufacted, assembled, coded, the virtuality machines, and the founder of the company. Like my Facebook page, Retro VR please.
