This week sees the launch of a unique new virtual reality (VR) experience named Obolo. The title can be downloaded for free over on the official Oculus VR Share Beta, and comes with full support for the Oculus Rift VR headset. The PC, Mac and Linux experience was originally developed over 72 hours by Team Eagle as part of the Ludum Dare 29 challenge, with support for the Oculus Rift being added in at a later date.
Obolos is a surreal VR experience in which players find themselves rowing a boat on a vast sea. Eventually they may come across strangers in other boats, later being asked to ‘pay the fare’. It’s up to players to work out what this instruction might mean and how they might solve it. The title is a multiplayer experience, although it is not required to play through the videogame. The developer describes Obolos as ‘Dear Esther meets Journey‘ when combining its mood with the multiplayer.
Speaking of the release of the Oculus Rift version, the developer noted that ‘we’ve really aimed for the mood factor in our game and I think it comes across with the rift even better (including headphones)’.
VRFocus will continue to follow any and all uses of VR, report back with any more news and updates.
