Oculus Expresses Concern Over Project Morpheus Investment and Hardware Limitations

Oculus VR is quite rightly seen as the driving force behind the revival of the virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD). The company’s Oculus Rift VR HMD has led the charge for the technology over the past few years, bringing us to a point in which competitors such as Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE) Project Morpheus VR HMD for PlayStation 4 have started to appear. In the past, the company has expressed excitement over names such as SCE getting involved with the technology. Last week at Gamescom 2014 however, it touched upon some of its concerns.


Oculus VR Founder Palmer Luckey and VP of Product Nate Mitchell both raised potential issues with Project Morpheus in an interview with Gamasutra. Speaking on other hardware devices potentially harming VR, Mitchell stated that, “We really can’t control the hardware devices, which is one of the things that we’re most worried about. If people ask us, ‘What do you think of Morpheus?,’ on the one hand it’s amazing to see Sony come into the market, because it means more funding for developers…”

“If they actually invest in it, of course,” Luckey then noted.

“Yeah, Morpheus isn’t a product,” Mitchell continued. “That’s true, and it’s an important point – they haven’t even said they are going to invest yet.”

Luckey went on to talk about how SCE was yet to commit to publishing actual VR content itself. His statements and concerns were reflected earlier in the year at E3 when SCE’s Jim Ryan noted that Project Morpheus’ release was yet to actually be confirmed even within the company itself.

“But yeah, we’re excited about that. But if the hardware isn’t good enough, and it gives a bad experience and can’t deliver presence – and actually one of the limited factors for them may end up being the PS4, for example – that’s a major problem. That’s kinda beyond our control, and that’s really frustrating.”

SCE continued to remain tight-lipped about Project Morpheus at this year’s Gamescom in Cologne, Germany. The technology received a simple mention at the company’s press conference, though a few indie titles did announce support for the device. Just when the company will reveal more about its projects remains to be seen.
