Sony Discusing ‘Getting the Best’ from Next-Gen Engines and VR Today

Last month VRFocus reported on two virtual reality (VR) talks that were scheduled to take place at this week’s Game Developers Conference (GDC) Europe, taking place this week. One was from Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE), talking about developing VR videogames. Now the company has scheduled another VR-based session for today, talking about next-generation videogame engines and more.


The talk, titled ‘Virtual Reality and Getting the Best from Your Next-Gen Engine’, is set to take place at 16:15 CEST and will be hosted by SCE Immersive Technology Group technical director Ian Bickerstaff and Reasearch and Development senior engineer Patrick Connor. The two will discuss the importance of creating a videogame enginge that can sustain VR development, with its need for high frame rates and low-latency.

Bickerstaff and Connor will offer advice on how to deliver high-quality VR, focusing mainly on the Project Morpheus VR head-mounted display (HMD) for the PlayStation 4. It is also stressed that many of the techniques discussed will be applicable to standard videogame development as well as VR development.

“Attendees will gain an understanding of the features of the Project Morpheus VR system and technical considerations on how to develop games for virtual reality.”

The talk comes ahead of SCE’s PlayStation press conference for Gamescom 2014 on 12th August 2014. Following that Gamescom itself will take place on 13th – 17th in Cologne, Germany. VRFocus will be at the event to bring you all the latest on the VR industry.
