Sony Still ‘figuring out’ How Much Resource to Invest in Project Morpheus

Despite its reveal earlier in the year and presence at both E3 and Gamescom 2014, Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE) Project Morpheus virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) is yet to see a push towards the consumer market. In fact, the device is still very much in its prototype stages and will likely see a design overhaul and a new name before its released. Even SCE itself is yet to decide just how much resource will be devoted to the kit, as SCE Europe CEO Jim Ryan recently revealed.

Speaking to Metro, Ryan again emphasised that Project Morpheus was still very much in an R&D stage, and that the company was ‘figuring out’ how much resource can be devoted to its eventual consumer push. “Right now Morpheus is still R&D and one of the things we’re figuring out is precisely how much resource can be, and needs to be, devoted to it,” Ryan said. “Because what’s apparent is that you can’t just take a PS4 game and just port it to virtual reality, that’s not gonna work.”

Ryan continued, stating that SCE is looking ‘very carefully’ at how to balance Project Morpheus with the rest of the PlayStation buisness. “What is the right sort of gaming experience? What’s the development effort required? Because if we can’t afford to do it then other people won’t be able to afford to do it. But there is something there, everybody that tries it goes ‘wow!’ and so there appears to be consumer acceptance of the concept. And when that happens usually businesses find a way, to meet consumer demand. Now, like I say, it’s just R&D at the moment and that is one of a long list of things that we’re trying to figure out the answer to.”

There are both positives and negatives to the approach that Ryan details here. Interestingly, Oculus VR’s Palemr Luckey and Nate Mitchell recently expressed concern of the seeming lack of commitment from SCE at this early stage in the technology’s life. Just how far SCE intends to go with Project Morpheus remains to be seen at this point in time.

VRFocus will continue to follow Project Morpheus going forward, reporting back with any further updates.
