Sony’s Benson on Project Morpheus: ‘People just fall in love with it’

Sony Computer Entertainment’s (SCE) unveiling of Project Morpheus, the PlayStation branded virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) came as a surprise to many, but in truth the company had been showcasing their technology to developers worldwide for some time prior to the reveal. Simon Benson, Director of SCE’s Worldwide Studios Immersive Technology Group, enthusiastically recalls some of the reactions his team received during this process.

“We’ve demonstrated this technology to many many developers and typically what we’ve found is people just fall in love with it,” states Benson in an interview with VRFocus. “Many people who are very seasoned technical directors from games studios; as soon as they try it on they say ‘look, I got into the games industry because this is my dream: to make virtual reality.'”

Project Morpheus is one of the most highly anticipated HMDs of the forthcoming VR revolution, with the Oculus Rift currently considered it’s main competitor. Both HMDs are expected to launch neat year and while neither are final, each has it’s own strengths and weaknesses. Of course, it’s not all about the hardware: software is was drives the videogames industry.

“The passion that we’ve found from the development community has been enormous. People truly want to make amazing things for this technology.” Benson continues, “Many of them are just going back to ideas they’ve had when they were young and saying, ‘I’ve always wanted to make this and now this technology allows me to do that.'”

Further details on the public release of Project Morpheus, including price and date, are not available at this point. Confirmation of such vital information is expected in the coming months and VRFocus will keep you updated with all the latest details.
