Survival Adventure Title Kôna Launches Kickstarter, VR Support Possible

Indie developer Parabole has recently launched a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign for an intriguing new survival adventure videogame that could feature support for the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display. The title, named Kôna, is hoping to raise $40,000 CAD by 6th September 2014 in order to fund development on PC. VR support is teased as an as of yet unknown stretch goal.

Kôna takes place in the 1970’s in Northern Quebec. Players are casts as Carl Faubert, a private detective hired to investigate the vandalism of a summer residence of rich inudstrialist W. Hamilton. It is suspected that the local community of Cree people are to blame, clashing with Hamilton over claims of destorying sacred land to increase profits. However when Faubert arrives in the area, he finds it completely deserted.

As Faubert tries to locate the missing people players will have to solve various puzzles, search for clues, take pictures of evidence and survive in the harsh environment. The title will offer players full control over vehicles such as a snowmobile. Action is also hinted at, with players using rifles to defend themselves from ‘mysterious threats’. Parabole describes the title as being ‘built for people with brains’, lacking any hints as to how to progress or any mandatory tutorials.

“Supporting virtual reality for the game is at the top of our wish list,” the developer said of the potential VR support. “Kôna would be awesome on the Oculus Rift. That unfortunately comes at a cost we cannot impose on all backers. Instead of being part of the base goal, the VR support will appear as the first stretch goal of this campaign.”

Kôna will be released episodically with the first episode expected to release in April 2015 on PC. Those interested can pledge $5 to secure a digital copy of the first episode, with a season pass of all four episodes currently going for $15. VRFocus will continue to follow the title going forward, reporting back with any further updates.

  1. Hi!

After running some tests on the Oculus, its implementation is so easy that we decided to support the platform with our campaign base goal.

VR enthusiasts will also have the opportunity to play our atmospheric demo on the Oculus by the end of this week 🙂
