Unreal Engine 4.4 Update Improves Morpheus Support

Last month saw Epic Games update its popular Unreal Engine 4 to version 4.3, adding support for the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display’s (HMD) second development kit (DK2). This week sees the next version of the development tool roll out. While it doesn’t include any further updates for the Oculus Rift, it does feature some significant improvements to the support for the Project Morpheus PlayStation 4 VR HMD.


On top of noting a general update to the Project Morpheus support, the update includes new Design and Verification Tools (DVT) 1.1. There are also a number of fixers made for both shaders and tracking for the device. Of course, this is far from the only update in Unreal Engine 4.4, and the raft of extra additions, fixes and tweaks will go towards improving the quality of all VR experiences both on Project Morpheus and Oculus Rift.

Project Morpheus was revealed by Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) at the 2014 Game Developers Conference (GDC). Like the Oculus Rift DK2, it features positional tracking and a 1080p display, though opts for a LCD panel as opposed to DK2’s OLED one. Just when the device will be detailed further is unclear, with SCE only mentionning the device in passing as its Gamescom 2014 event earlier this week.
