Caffeine Launches Final Pre-Release Demo

Indie developer Incandecent Imaging has provided videogame fans with plenty of opportunities to test out its upcoming virtual reality (VR) compatible horror title, Caffeine, over the past week months. The developer has released a steady stream of updates to a demo for the first-person experience. This week sees the launch of the final version of that demo, bringing a host of tweaks and fixes as well as improved support for the Oculus Rift VR head-mounted display (HMD). The demo can be downloaded through the developer’s official website.¬†

The Caffeine pre-release demo 1.0 features a ‘substantial performance increase’ which has been achieved through the implementation of level streaming. The developer has also made a number of improvements to the title’s physics based object interaction system as well as added in-game graphical settings. The previously buggy crouching has been fixed and new bakcground lore has also been added.

Crucially, this latest version of the demo is based upon the recently-released Unreal Engine 4.4.1, meaning the developer has now been able to integrate full support for the Oculus Rift’s second development kit (DK2). In the past DK2 has been supported though the developer hasn’t been able to garauntee full compatibility until now. On top of all of this ‘a few other surprises’ were also teased to be included. The demo is compatible with both PC and Linux.

Caffeine is a first-person horror title in which players are cast as a young boy that awakens on board an abandoned caffeine mining facility in place. Players solve puzzles and avoid traps as they explore the area, trying to decipher what has happened. The title is set to arrive on both PC and Linux and PlayStation 4, with support for the Project Morpheus VR HMD possible on the latter. VRFocus will continue to follow Caffeine going forward, reporting back with any further updates on the title’s development.
