It was just last week that VRFocus selected the popular The Lord of the Rings franchise for its weekly ‘Make it a (Virtual) Reality‘ piece, looking at how the series might fit in virtual reality (VR). Around the same time an indie developer by the name of Paul DeMarco actually realised some of those dreams with the release of a free new VR experience based on the franchise named The Lord of the Rings: The Great River.
This VR demo takes place on one of the rivers of Middle-Earth, the fictional fantasy setting that the series is based in. Players take part in a boat ride downstream, discovering some of the sights that were first brought to life in director Peter Jackson’s popular movie trilogy. The title has no objectives other than to enjoy the ride and become fully immersed in this peaceful rendition of Middle-Earth.
The Lord of the Rings: The Great River can currently be downloaded for free over on the official Oculus VR Share Beta on PC. It is compatible with both the first and second development kits (DK1 and DK2) for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD). VRFocus will continue to follow any and all applications of VR, reporting back with any further updates on the technology and its software.
