Lucky’s Tale Confirmed for Gear VR

Eyebrows were raised yesterday when Samsung revealed a list of partners working on its Gear VR head-mounted display (HMD), which had been announced earlier in the day. High profile names such as Marvel Entertainment and Harmonix were confirmed to be working on the smartphone-based virtual reality (VR) device. Another name listed among them was Playful, the developer behind the anticipated upcoming Oculus Rift exclusive, Lucky’s Tale. But just what is the developer bringing to the platform?

As it turns out, Playful is in fact developing a mobile version of Lucky’s Tale for the device. A demo for the experience was on display following Samsung’s Gear VR reveal event, although VRFocus was only recently able to confirm that it was in fact one and the same playable title. On display is a sample of the opening level of the experience. Eventually the full videogame should be making its way to the platform.

Lucky’s Tale is a third-person platforming experience in which players control Lucky, a cartoon fox. The title features colourful environments in which players hunt for collectibles, solve puzzles and defeat enemies. The Oculus Rift version of the videogame is being published by Oculus VR itself. It’s not clear if the same will apply to the Gear VR version, although Oculus VR has partnered with Samsung itself to work on the device, and is co-publishing titles from nDreams from it.

Right now there’s no word on if this version of Lucky’s Tale might be launching ahead of the Oculus Rift version or even if the two will be identical from a content perspective. Gear VR is expected to launch in mid-October, while VR fans are still waiting on news for the consumer Oculus Rift. VRFocus will continue to follow Lucky’s Tale on both Gear VR and Oculus Rift going forward, reporting back with any further updates.
