Lucky’s Tale Dev on Virtual Reality: ‘The ideal place for a third-person platform game’

Playful Corp. broke the mould when they revealed the playable version of their debut virtual reality (VR) videogame at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) back in June of this year. Until that point the general consensus from the development community was that first-person experiences were to be the entry point and more detached designs follow. Third-person however? It wouldn’t work. Playful Corp. proved otherwise, and know CEO Paul Bettner does in fact think VR is ‘ideal’ for third-person videogames.

Bettner and his team spent a long time experimenting with the third-person camera to find out what works and what doesn’t in VR, and Lucky’s Tale is the product of this experimentation. Speaking candidly in an interview with VRFocus Bettner reveals that his direct inspiration for Lucky’s Tale is the Super Mario series, and through directly copying that template he was surprised by how well it worked in VR.


“That’s what people say when they see the demo now,” says Bettner. “I think in their heads they’re thinking ‘this isn’t going to work!’ before they see it. And then they put it on and they experience this character right in front of them and [he] looks up and waves at them, and they realise [that] virtual reality is actually the ideal place to experience a third-person platforming game.”

Since the reveal of Lucky’s Tale there have been a number of third-person titles announced for various VR head-mounted displays (HMDs), including the recent unveiling of James’s Legacy: The Prologue for Samsung’s Gear VR; a format which Lucky’s Tale will also be gracing.
