Oculus Cinema for Gear VR Gets First Screenshots

This month’s reveal of Samsung’s Gear VR smartphone-based virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD) didn’t just grant us a look at new hardware developed in partnership with Oculus VR but also the first software from the company too. While the mysterious VR Quest was revealed to be the VR specialist’s first effort at creating an actual videogame, the team also revealed Oculus Cinema. This is essentially a virtual hub for users to watch video content on a large screen inside a cinema room. Now that app has received its first official screenshots.

A total of six images of Oculus Cinema can be seen below, showcasing various aspects of the software. First up, a lobby area can be seen with posters acting as thumbnails for video selections. Moving inside you can see a traditional theatre complete with a number of seats and an enormous screen. Based on the other pictures it would appear that users will be able to customise the interior of the theatre and even completely change their surroundings. One image even shows the cinema screen propped up on the moon. The final image suggests that this is one of three locations, the others being the cinema and a home theatre.

Gear VR is expected to launch in mid-October as an Innovator Edition for early adopters and VR developers. It’s thought that the hardware will be launching with free software at first. Could Oculus Cinema be ready for release? VRFocus will continue to follow the app’s progress moving forward reporting back with any further updates on the title’s release.
