Oculus Working on Avatar-Based Social Software for Gear VR

Social virtual reality (VR) will undoubtedly be a huge pull for head-mounted displays such as the Oculus Rift when developers finally figure it out. However it presents a whole new set of challenges beyond what companies such as Oculus VR are dealing with right now. That said, the company’s Chief Technology Officer John Carmack revealed that his team has been working on an avatar-based social software for Samsung’s Gear VR smartphone-based VR head-mounted display (HMD).

When asked about avatar-based social VR and its potential during a panel at the Oculus Connect developer conference in Hollywood, California, Carmack mentionned that he had begun working on such software in the build up to the reveal of Gear VR, which took place earlier in September 2014. Unfortunately the developers ran out of time before the reveal, although Carmack did suggest that the company is still working on the software, and it could see release later down the line.

Gear VR is expected to launch in mid-October 2014 as an Innovator Edition. While this version will be available to consumers, it’s designed for developers and early adopters first and foremost. Earlier in the day Carmack hinted that the device could see continuous updates in the future, following Samsung’s own annual release cycle. VRFocus will continue to follow any and all news surrounding VR, reporting back with any further updates.
