Reel FX Announce New VR Division in Reel FX VR

Yet another company outside of the videogame industry has pledged its support for virtual reality (VR) this week. Indie animation studio Reel FX has revealed Reel FX VR, a new division devoted to creating new VR content. The new team will be working across a range of VR platforms, but specifically notes that it is working with the upcoming Innovator Edtion of the Samsung Gear VR smartphone-based head-mounted display (HMD), expected to launch in October 2014.

You may remember that Reel FX was involved in the creation of VR experiences for US family restaurant Chuck E. Cheese as well as the Pacific Rim: Jaeger Pilot experience that debuted at San Diego Comic Con 2014 on Oculus Rift before heading to Gear VR. The studio’s upcoming project, The Book of Life from director Guillermo del Toro, also featured as one of the many trailers running on Gear VR when it was revealed at an event in early September 2014.

“As a studio, we are passionate about finding, using, and pushing technology,” said Dale Carman, Founder and Executive Creative Director of Reel FX. “I knew the moment I encountered Oculus on Kickstarter that it was magic. Creating these experiences for clients like Legendary and our own films and working closely with Samsung and Oculus has been a great journey so far and we are excited about the future.”

The studio will be overseen by Carman, General Manager Keith McCabe and Executive Producer Gary Banks. The studio has this week started showcasing VR technology at its Dallas studio for industry professionals to come and sample.

VRFocus will continue to follow any and all applications of VR, reporting back with any further updates.
