Unreal Engine 4 Looking to Support Gear VR and Project Tango

Epic Games has been one of a virtual reality’s (VR) biggest supporters at this early stage in the technology’s revival. With the release of its latest software development engine, Unreal Engine 4, the company has enabled a range of developers from both indie and larger backgrounds to develop for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD) and even the upcoming Project Morpheus HMD on PlayStation 4. Of course, these two devices are far from the only VR HMDs currently in development, and it appears as if the company will also be adding support for Samsung’s Gear VR smartphone-based HMD in the future.


As Road to VR has spotted, Epic Games has updated its ‘Unreal Engine 4 Roadmap‘, which is available for anyone to view, with two new additions on its VR ‘to do’ list. The first is support for the Gear VR, which was announced earlier in September 2014 in collaboration with Oculus Rift maker Oculus VR itself, using Samsung’s Galaxy Note 4 as a display. The other note is adding support for Google’s Project Tango system, which uses smartphones to accurately map a real life environment as a 3D virtual space in a short amount of time.

This news is hardly surprising given that Unreal Engine 4 is already available for Android, the mobile operating system (OS) which the Galaxy Note 4 runs on. That said, many of the titles currently announced for Gear VR are running on the Unity engine, so this does open the door for a whole new wave of VR videogames to make their way to Gear VR. As for Project Tango, the combination of the system with Unreal Engine 4 should allow for the easy creation of solid VR content.

Gear VR is thought to be launching in mid-October 2014 as an Innovator Edition that is designed for developers and early adopters. Although Samsung itself is yet to confirm a price, it has been suggested that it will come in under $200 USD.
