Unreal Engine 4 Version of Ether One to ‘push a lot of focus in VR’

When White Paper Games’ debut videogame, Ether One, launched earlier in 2014 it did so with support for the Oculus Rift virtual reality (VR) head-mounted display (HMD). VRFocus praised the title upon its arrival but, as White Paper Games itself has admitted, the VR support was integrated fairly late into development and suffered somewhat as a result. That won’t be the case with the upcoming new version of the title, however, which is transitioning to Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4.

Writing on the developer’s official blog White Paper Games confirmed that VR would be seeing ‘a lot of focus’ in the updated version of the title on PC. “On the programming side we’ve decided to push a lot of focus in VR so we should have some fun updates for that in the next few weeks,” the developer noted. “Although a lot of people loved the Rift integration in the UDK version of Ether, it was implemented quite late on into development and we feel we can do an even better job this time around. So whilst everyone else is working on polishing the rest of the game, Dave will be putting a lot of focus into VR which should be really fun.”

Ether One is a first-person adventure in which players enter the mind of a mentally handicapped patient and attempt to restore their mind. The new version of the title is also due to arrive on PlayStation 4, though the developer has said that support for the Project Morpheus VR HMD isn’t to be included for now. The title will be on display this week as part of Epic Games’ booth at the EGX London event in Earls Court on 25th – 28th September 2014.

VRFocus will continue to follow Ether One going forward, reporting back on any further updates to the title’s progress.

  1. Will people who already own Ether One automatically get the updated version? I am going to be pretty upset if that’s not the case.
