It was in May 2014 that VRFocus first reported on Flagship, a unique space strategy title from indie developer Urban Logic Games with virtual reality (VR) support. The title has proven to be one to watch over the past few months thanks to its intuitive design, and has now launched a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign looking for £95,000 GBP to help fund development. Should it pass its campaign then Flagship will launch with full support for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD).
Flagship is a first-person real-time strategy (RTS) experience in which players command various units in space battles from a computer interface on board a capital ship situated within the battle itself. The story sees players trying to reestablish the human race within the wider galaxy following previous defeats that have left it in ruins. Players conquor and colonise planets in order to mind resources and expand the human fleet as well as provide for the remaining population.
A computer in the middle of the player’s capital ship allows them control over much of the battlefield as they might expect in a more traditional RTS title. From here it is also possible to see conflicts in other areas and issue commands to units in those sections or warp in to assume a more direct control. A number of different types of ships can be used in battle including standard fighters and larger capital ships.
Those interested in Flagship can currently pledge £20 to secure a digital copy of the title on PC. Mac and Linux versions are also planned, though the developer has warned that these might arrive earlier. Backer rewards continue up to £1,000 where two fans can have their faces placed in the title as NPCs. Flagship‘s Kickstarter campaign will come to an end on 16th October 2014. VRFocus will continue to follow the title going forward, reporting back with any progress it makes.
