Horror Movie Banshee Chapter Gets Oculus Rift Adaption

Later this week Condition One will release Zero Point, a virtual reality (VR) compatible documentary that audiences watch using an Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD). For a long time it’s been thought that Zero Point will be the first Oculus Rift compatible film to release. Surprisingly, the title has had that honour stripped from it mere days before launch, as creation studio Jamwix has launched a VR compatible version of its full-length horror experience, Banshee Chapter.

Banshee Chapter: Oculus Rift Edition is available now to download for free from the company’s website. A video introducing the experience can be seen below. The title is directed by Jamwix’s Blair Erickson and features producer credits from the likes of Sunchaser Entertainment’s Stephanie Riggs, Before the Door’s Corey Moosa and Sean Akers, Christian Arnold-Beutel and even executive producer credits from Zachary Quinto, best known for playing Spock in the recent Star Trek movies.

Banshee Chapter was first released in 2013. The movie follows Anne Roland, played by Katia Winter. The audience follows Roland as she explores the sudden disappearance of her friend, discovering likes to a government research chemical and a mysterious radio broadcast. Of course, it isn’t long before Roland finds herself in the middle of her own nightmare. In the Oculus Rift compatible version of the movie the audience can look around 3D environments using the device’s head-tracking technology.

This surprise release also means that Hell Mountain, the proposed Oculus Rift film franchised that launched a crowd-funding campaign last week, is no longer the only horror movie for VR. It’s certainly been an interesting month for VR movies, then, which were mostly only talked about up until this point. VRFocus will continue to follow each of these projects and any more VR media, reporting back with all the latest updates.
