Crystal Rift Hits Steam Greenlight

In September 2014 indie developer Jon Hibbins announced that virtual reality (VR) developer Nick ‘Red of Paw’ Pittom would be coming on board to help on the development of upcoming VR dungeon crawling videogame, Crystal Rift. It was a move that Hibbins hopes will help the title be ready in time for a Summer 2015 launch on PC. It certainly seems as if the pair are on course, as they have today launched a Steam Greenlight campaign for Crystal Rift.

The campaign hopes to secure enough positive votes so that it can be sold on Valve’s full digital store come launch. Crystal Rift is a first-person experience in which players explore one of three different environments moving one step at a time on a square-based grid. Players will be tasked with avoiding traps and solving puzzles as they progress through each area. One of the title’s main features is a level editor which enables other players to create their own levels.

VRFocus spoke to Hibbins about Crystal Rift earlier in the year. The developer spoke on his hopes for the title to evolve into a content creation platform, its optional horror elements and the campaign’s story. A runthrough of one of the title’s earliest environments also revealed a surprsingly comfortable experience. When Crystal Rift does launch it will feature full support for the Oculus Rift head-mounted disply (HMD). VRFocus will continue to follow the title’s progress, reporting back with any further updates on it.
