Elite: Dangerous Beta 3 Released

Frontier Developments has reached another milestone in the build up to the release of its anticipated virtual reality (VR) compatible space simulation title, Elite: Dangerous. After a series of updates to the title’s second beta the developer has today launched Beta 3 for the upcoming PC videogame, bringing with it a host of new updates ahead of the full release, which is still expected to take place in 2014.


Highlighting Beta 3 is the addition of more star systems to Elite: Dangerous‘ already expansive list of locations. The title now contains 2,406 systems, which is five times as many as seen in Beta 2. These new areas will introduce some new sights for players such as the first blue B class star and three class five gas giants. Two terrestrial planets with silicate vapour atmospheres can also be discovered somewhere within the title’s universe. In total almost 25,000 planets now feature in the Beta.

Elsewhere the title now allows for multiple ship ownership, in which players can own as many ships as they like. New features such as mining will also be included along with the usual round of bug fixes and tweaks. New ships have been added as have new missions and some audio clips. The list goes on, and the full changelog can be seen over at the official Frontier Developments forums.

Those interested in Elite: Dangerous can currently gain access to the title’s Beta from its official website for £50 GBP or pre-order the full version as a Mercenary Edition for £35. A specific date for the full release is yet to be revealed. When the title does launch it will do so with full support for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD).   1. It might be worth noting that the changelog features an overhaul of the DirectAccess mode for Oculus Rift DK2. The devs at frontier are working hard to make this the ‘killer App’ for the Rift, and as far as the Direct Access mode is concerned, this is where the major changes need to be made in line with SDK 0.4.3 changes to boost the prevalence of Low Perception.
