Fierce Kaiju Announce Viral for Gear VR

Virtual reality (VR) developers have flocked to support Samsung’s Gear VR smartphone-based head-mounted display (HMD) since it was launched in September 2014. Although the initial wave of reveals is now a distant memory there are still some titles that have slipped under the radar and are only just finding the spotlight now. One such title is Viral from newly-formed indie team Fierce Kaiju. The developer consists of a team with experience on series such as Grand Theft Auto and Call of Duty.

Viral casts players as Ragnorok, an anti-virus system that works to eliminate the threat of infection in computer systems. Players will find themselves fighting viruses within a system known as E.V.E. (Emotional Virtual Engine). The developer explains that Viral uses a simple, intuitive control scheme paired with physics-based gameplay as players fight increasingly challenging manifestations of the virus. They can expect powerups to aid them as well as help from E.V.E. itself.

Viral is a single-player only experience that boasts a blocky art style in which the virus appears as humanoid figures. It appears as if a scoring system will also be in place as players take down enemies. Fierce Kaiju is aiming to release the title on Gear VR before the end of 2014. Of course, the HMD itself is yet to receive a solid release date and, when it does launch, will only support a free store. How this affects the developer’s plans is unknown.

VRFocus will continue to follow Viral as it moves towards launch, reporting back with any further updates on its progress.
