Fireproof Games: The Room VR Would be ‘interesting’ but ‘very, very difficult’ to do

Fireproof Games has gained a lot of attention over the past few years with its popular franchise of puzzle-based mobile videogames, The Room. Recently the developer revealed The Room Three alongside a new virtual reality (VR) videogame named Omega Agent. VRFocus recently spoke to the developer’s Barry Meade about Omega Agent at this year’s EGX. Naturally, the topic of porting The Room titles to VR eventually came up.

When VRFocus suggested that The Room has could have potential for an interesting VR experience, Meade replied: “It does. We’ve been approached by a lot of people to put the game on different kinds of VR platforms. And we’ve always said no to it because we knew right from the start when we played on the Gear VR from the get go, you will not do justice to this platform if you don’t design from the ground up, from the strengths and the weaknesses of the hardware, which is exactly how we designed The Room for touch-based mobile devices. That’s why the game plays the way it does and we’re taking the same approach with this.

“Because The Room would be interesting to do,” Meade continued. “It would be very, very difficult to port, number one. I mean it would be basically redoing the game from the ground up because the control system and the camera system is so set in the gameplay that it would be very difficult to change that in any radical way. So if we ever did a Room-type game on VR it would be purpose built from the ground up for that experience because otherwise you’re selling the platform short. And the game, frankly.”

For now, The Room Three is set to release in spring 2015 on the iOS operating system (OS), with an Android OS release following on later. The series sees players trying to solve a number of unique challenges that, as Meade explained have been designed specifically for touchscreens. As for Omega Agent, the title is looking to release around the time of the launch of the Gear VR smartphone-based head-mounted display (HMD). VRFocus will continue to follow the title closely, reporting back with any further updates.
