Flagship Dev Cancels Kickstarter, ‘Heartbroken’ But Will Continue Development

Indie developer Urban Logic Games has hit an unfortunate setback with the development of its upcoming virtual reality (VR) compatible real-time strategy (RTS) title Flagship. The developer has cancelled the Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign for the title just days before it was due to close on 16th October 2014. Since launching on 16th September 2014 the developer had raised £48,945 GBP with the help of 1,700 backers leaving just under £50,000 still to raise to reach its £95,000.

“It’s looking like the campaign isn’t going to turn around,” developer Brad Jeffery wrote in a Kickstarter update, “so rather than drag this out for another 5 days we’re going to end it now. I know this will disappoint many of you, and for that we are very sorry. This has been a heartbreaking process for us.

“To all those who backed us, tweeted, posted on forums and told their friends; to the journalists that covered the game; to the ever-patient girlfriends and worrying parents; we wouldn’t have made it this far without you, and we’re deeply grateful to you all.

Flagship is still our dream game, and we’re not giving up on it. One day you’ll get your ship.”

The developer didn’t note just how it intends to keep working on Flagship. The title boasted a unique premise in which players control their fleet of spaceships using a computer console located on a flagship. As players issue commands they are able to see them carried out on the battlefield outside the ship. The experience features full support for the Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD), aiming to create a truly immersive experience.

Urban Logic Games had initially hoped to launch Flagship on PC in December 2016. It’s not yet clear if this setback will effect the title’s launch date. VRFocus will continue to follow Flagship, reporting back with any further updates on the title’s progress.
